He was born in Shahba city in As-Suwayda Governorate in Syria. He studied medicine at Damascus University, and from there his journey to realize his dreams began. His graduation thesis was supervised by Dr. Kamal Amer, one of the prominent surgery professors. To achieve his goals, he decided to immigrate to Britain.

After graduating from Damascus University, Dr. Ismail Al-Khatib moved to the United Kingdom, where he studied at the University of Cambridge and earned a doctorate in surgery. Subsequently, he received several prestigious awards, including a golden medal from the "Lady Lumley" which represents the Queen of Britain, and a golden medal from the "Eastman" Institute.
However, Dr. Al-Khatib did not stop there. He decided to move to the United States, where he conducted sensitive research and entered the American system to obtain several boards in the field of cardiothoracic surgery. He also experimented at Yale University to trial a new heart transplant technique.
Al-Khatib and Harvard University
Dr. Al-Khatib joined Harvard University, where he performed heart and lung transplant surgeries. He became the first person to receive a Harvard fellowship in the field of cardiothoracic surgery from the same university due to his excellence in this specialty, which reflects his remarkable skills and dedication to providing the best medical services to patients. He received the Golden Scissors from the university, which he dedicated to all Syrians and to his people in his hometown, "Shahba".
