A new global brilliance with a Ma'roufi signature, added by the son of Aiha town in the Rashaya district, Dr. Suleiman Salim Abu Latif, born in 1978, a graduate of the Faculty of Medicine at the Lebanese University in 2003, by obtaining in December 2018 the Fellowship of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists “which is the highest title in the ophthalmology profession in the world,” after undergoing four stages of examinations, in addition to achieving a fellow degree in retinal surgery after two years of training at Moorfields Eye Hospital in July of last year, 2018, which is considered the largest specialized eye hospital in the world.

Moorfields Hospital, according to Dr. Abu Latif, is “an icon of ophthalmology in the world, in the era of specialized medicine where the focus is on how to develop science and employ it in the service and advancement of medicine through the use of the latest findings of modern science, especially the genome, gene therapy, and the use of stem cells and drugs based on the composition of very small molecules, especially in the treatment of hereditary retinal diseases.”

While pointing out “his experience working with doctors from various countries of the world and his training of some of them in this global specialized hospital, in addition to medical consultations for patients,” Abu Latif noted his use of 3D technology in performing retinal surgeries and other delicate eye-related operations.

Abu Latif, who pursued ophthalmology at the Arab University, then at Ghent University Hospital in Belgium, where he specialized in retinal diseases, surgery, and genetic diseases, moved thereafter to Britain to continue his specialization in eye surgery since 2009. He rode the horse of the dream to achieve what his soul aspired to—to add special and new imprints in this specialty that he loved and mastered to the best of his ability, until it became part of his essence, nay, his very makeup, as he obtained in 2011 the membership and diploma of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists.

In Abu Latif's portfolio are more than six articles in international medical journals. He also presented several lectures at the Euretina conference for retinal specialists in Milan, Nice, Copenhagen, and Vienna. He also holds the first prize for excellence in patient service as one of the retinal surgery team at St. George's Hospital in London.
