Mohammad Ali Melhem Hamadeh (1907 – May 8, 1987) was a Lebanese politician, diplomat, and journalist.
Mohammad Ali bin Melhem bin Mustafa bin Ali Hamadeh was born in 1907 in Baakline. He graduated as a lawyer from the University of Paris, worked in politics, and participated in many national movements. He joined the Syrian Arab Association in Paris in 1928, which was founded by Abd al-Rahman Shahbandar, and then served as its secretary-general, followed by its president for two years. In 1933, he returned to Lebanon and joined the Republican Independence Party founded by Uzair al-Hashim, then contributed to the founding of the National Call Party in 1940. In 1943, he was arrested during the era of President Ayoub Tabet.
During the independence era, he was appointed in 1944 to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as Consul General in Paris and Marseille, then as Head of the Arab Affairs Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and later as Head of the Political Department in 1946. He then served as Acting Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1949, then as Chargé d'Affaires at the Lebanese Embassy in Athens in 1950, then as Minister Plenipotentiary and subsequently Ambassador of Lebanon to Greece and Yugoslavia in 1954, then Ambassador of Lebanon to Turkey in 1955, then Assistant Secretary-General at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1957, then Acting Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1958, then Ambassador of Lebanon to Austria in 1959, and then Ambassador of Lebanon to the group of West and Central African states, residing in Dakar, the capital of Senegal, from 1961 until 1966 when he retired.
He had an inclination toward journalism, so in 1969 he founded the magazine "Contemporary Issues" (Al-Qadaya al-Mu'asira) and wrote extensively in newspapers and magazines, and delivered many speeches and lectures.
When he left his post, he was elected Chairman of the Board of Directors of Dar An-Nahar for Printing and Publishing in Beirut and its General Manager, a position he held until his death.
Mohammad Ali Hamadeh passed away on Friday, May 8, 1987, in Beirut, and his body was transported to his hometown of Baakline in a solemn and grand funeral.
