Akram Hussein Chehayeb is a Lebanese politician, Member of Parliament, and minister belonging to the Progressive Socialist Party.

Chehayeb was born in the city of Aley on October 17, 1947. He practiced teaching in his early youth before engaging in political work and joining the Progressive Socialist Party in 1979. He holds a degree in history from Beirut Arab University and a master's degree in modern history from the University of Cairo.

 

Politics and Parliament

He has moved through more than one leadership position within the party, played pivotal roles during both the war and peace phases, and was among those closest to party leader Walid Jumblatt. He served as the head of the party's office in Damascus between 1985 and 1991. He was appointed as a Member of Parliament in 1991 following an increase in the number of parliamentary seats.

He was elected as a Member of Parliament for the Aley district in the years 1992, 1996, 2000, 2005, 2009, and 2018. He was re-elected as a Member of Parliament again in May 2022 for the Aley district.

He assumed several responsibilities in the Lebanese Parliament and left a legislative mark, particularly in chairing the Environment Committee.

He has held more than one ministerial portfolio, which are:

Appointed Minister of Environment in the government of the martyr Prime Minister Rafic Hariri between November 7, 1996, and December 4, 1998.

Appointed Minister of the Displaced in the government of Prime Minister Saad Hariri in 2010.

Appointed Minister of Agriculture in the government of Prime Minister Tammam Salam in 2014.

Appointed Minister of Education and Higher Education in the government of Prime Minister Saad Hariri in 2019.
