As-Suwayda native and singer Asil Masoud performed at the opening ceremony of the Barcelona Open tennis final, amid interaction and admiration from the audience for her performance.
The Spanish website “Fundació” stated that the Higher Institute of Music in Spain chose Asil to perform at the ceremony, where she and her band presented an operatic song titled “Con te partirò” (I will leave with you) in Italian, in the presence of the Spanish Ministers of Culture and Sports, the state governor, and numerous other figures.
Asil Masoud was born in As-Suwayda in 1990. She holds a degree from the Faculty of Medicine at Al-Qalamoun University, after which she traveled to Spain and studied classical singing at the Higher Institute of Music between 2015 and 2018.
However, her passion for music did not prevent Asil from continuing her medical studies, as she had her degree accredited in Spain and obtained a Master’s degree with honors in Music Therapy from the University of Barcelona in 2020.
She has received several musical awards, such as the “Corsica Lyrica” best performance award in France, the best operatic voice award in Barcelona, and an award at the Sitges festival competition in northern Catalonia.
Asil previously told the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), “I always seek to transfer my experiences and expertise to Syria through my frequent visits and holding concerts there, knowing that the Spanish people are engaged with the Syrian music that I seek to promote there.”
She and her husband, guitarist Ahmed Diab, founded the band “Athrodil” to merge flamenco music with Eastern maqams, and together they launched musical projects including “Love in Syria” and “Peace from Andalusia.”
She participated with her husband in several concerts in Syria, including the “Peace from Andalusia” project, which is flamenco with an oriental touch, presented at the Opera House in Damascus and the Roman Theater in Al-Qalamoun, in addition to a private initiative called “Window of Our House Theater” during the “COVID” pandemic, where they invested in music for social communication and building relationships with the community in Spain.
