Musician Farid al-Atrash was left deeply devastated after the passing of his sister, the artist Asmahan. Many do not know the painful story of the song "Ya Waheshni Rod Alaya," which he composed but could not sing.
When Farid composed this song, he was unable to sing it due to his constant weeping. He tried to sing the song, but he would remember his sister Asmahan and break down in tears, unable to finish it. This was especially true when he reached the third verse of the song, the lyrics of which say: "The night saw me alone.. It took me into its embrace and kept me awake.. And its stars remained all around me.. Talking to me and reminding me.. Reminding me of your nights.. Reminding me of your words.. Making me long for your eyes.. Making me long for your words." That verse would remind him of his late sister..
It is described that he was performing the song at a private gathering in his home, attended by director Ezz El-Dine Zulficar and singer Moharam Fouad.. Moharam Fouad suggested that he perform the song instead of him. Farid was convinced by the idea, and that is what happened; Moharam Fouad ended up singing it instead of Farid al-Atrash.
