On July 24, 1920, the Battle of Maysalun took place, which was the decisive battle between forces of Syrian volunteers led by Minister of War Yusuf al-Azma on one side, and French army forces led by General Mariano Goybet on the other.

The knights of Jabal al-Arab, led by Sultan al-Atrash, reached the town of Burraq, where they received the news of the martyrdom of Yusuf al-Azma.

Afterward, the French headed towards Damascus and entered it the following morning. The cabinet of Hashim al-Atassi resigned, while King Faisal moved his headquarters from Damascus to the Kiswah area, where he issued a royal decree forming a new cabinet headed by Mr. Ala' al-Din al-Durubi.

On July 27, General Gouraud issued a statement declaring martial law in the country and issued an ultimatum to King Faisal calling on him to leave Syria. He departed on July 29, 1920, heading to Daraa, then to Haifa, and from there to London.

During that time, Sultan Pasha al-Atrash sent his companions to catch up with King Faisal before he departed on the British cruiser in (Haifa), with a verbal message delivered by Hamad al-Barbour, the content of which was an invitation to the King to come to Jabal al-Arab to establish the Arab state there and continue the resistance, but King Faisal's answer was: "Tell Sultan, it is too late."
