In a gesture reflecting the morals and pride of Bani Ma'rouf, engineer Sarjoun Khio, a native of Sweida province, found 70,000 UAE Dirhams, handed them over to the police, and refused any reward.
His father, the journalist and writer Fawaz Khio, wrote in a post on his Facebook page:
“The great Sarjoun..
Sarjoun who couldn't send me money at the beginning of the month because he had several payments to make and Nour was coming to stay with him, asked me, 'Can you manage until the end of the month?' I told him, 'Sort out your affairs, I have my tobacco, my mate, and my barazek, and if I am in need, I will tell you.'
Sarjoun finds 70,000 Dirhams on the road, equivalent to 280 million Syrian Lira, takes them, and hands them over to the police.
True contentment is the contentment of the soul, and true greatness is the greatness of the soul, not the breadth of one's shoulders or the size of one's guest houses. Sarjoun saw the needs we faced, and I used to receive the biggest files on corruption; in one of the cases, a large sum was offered in 2007, and the constant decision was that I would neither consume nor feed my children a single penny of ill-gotten money.”
It is noteworthy that Sarjoun Khio hails from the town of Radimat al-Liwa in the northern countryside of Sweida province.
